Date Difference Calculator
Understand Date Difference Calculator
Calculates the gap between two dates in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years.
How it works
The elapsed part is straightforward arithmetic: both dates become millisecond timestamps, one is subtracted from the other, and the difference is divided by fixed constants — 60,000 for minutes, 3,600,000 for hours, 86,400,000 for days. Months and years cannot be done that way because they have no fixed length, so they are counted from the calendar components instead: months is (year₂ − year₁) × 12 + (month₂ − month₁). The two methods answer different questions, which is why a gap can read as 1 month and 1 day at the same time.
When to use it
- Counting the days remaining until a deadline, a renewal, or a certificate expiry
- Working out an exact age or tenure in years and months for a form or a report
- Measuring the interval between two log timestamps during an incident review
- Checking a retention window — how long ago a record was written, in days rather than in dates
Watch out for
- The month count uses calendar components, not whole months. January 31 to February 1 counts as 1 month, because only the month number is compared.
- A day is not always 86,400,000 milliseconds of wall clock. Across a daylight saving transition a local day is 23 or 25 hours, so a day count derived from elapsed milliseconds can be one short of what a calendar shows.
- Date string format changes the answer. JavaScript parses `2024-01-01` as UTC midnight but `2024/01/01` and `Jan 1 2024` as local midnight, so mixing the two forms folds your timezone offset into the result.
- Business days are not the same as calendar days divided by seven, and no tool knows your public holidays. Subtract those yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days between dates?
Enter a start and end date — the calculator shows the exact number of days, weeks, months, and years between them. Results include both calendar days and business days (Monday–Friday). The calculation handles leap years automatically.
How many business days between two dates?
Switch to Business Days mode to count only Monday–Friday, excluding weekends. Enter your start and end date and the tool returns the working-day count — useful for SLA deadlines, project schedules, and shipping estimates. Public holidays are not deducted automatically.
How to calculate days between dates?
Paste or type your two dates in any common format (YYYY-MM-DD, MM/DD/YYYY, or natural language). The tool subtracts the earlier date from the later one and breaks the result down into years, months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes.
